Të ashtuquajturit grekë nuk janë veçse shqiptarë të maskuar. Në shekullin e katërmbëdhjetë, Greqia nuk qe veçse një çiflig i shtëpisë princore të Buajve, shefi i të cilës mbante titullin e Baronit të Moresë, siç mund ta shihni në përmbledhjen e Kronikave greko-romane të botuara prej Hopfit, në frëngjisht, në Berlin. Më duket se u takon atyre, shqiptarëve të maskuar, të heqin maskën greke dhe të ribëhen ata që janë, shqiptarë.

I do not grieve for him as a wife, as Anne Devereux has grieved for her husband William Herbert. She promised him she would never remarry, she swore she would go to her grave hoping to meet him in heaven. I suppose they were in some sort of love, thought married by contract. I suppose they found some sort of passion in their marriage. It is rare but not impossible. I do hope that they have no given my son ideas about loving his wife; a man who is to be king can marry only for advantage. A woman of sense would marry only for the improvement of her family. Only a lustful fool dreams every night of a marriage of love.

The Bretton Woods saga unfurled at a unique crossroads in modern history. An ascendant anticolonial superpower, the United States, used its economic leverage over an insolvent allied imperial power, Great Britain, to set the terms by which the latter would cede its dwindling dominion over the rules and norms of foreign trade and finance. When evening comes, I go back home, and go to my study. On the threshold I take off my work clothes, covered in mud and filth, and put on the clothes an ambassador would wear. Decently dressed, I enter the ancient courts of rulers who have long since died. There I am warmly welcomed, and I feed on the only food I find nourishing, and was born to savor. Yong is the outer manifestation of something. Ti is the underlying essence. Technology is a yong associated with a particular ti that is ... Western, and completely alien to us [the Chinese]. For centuries, since the time of the Opium Wars, we have struggled to absorb the yong of technology without importing the Western ti. But it has been impossible. Just as our ancestors could not open our ports to the West without accepting the poison of opium, we could not open our lives to Western technology without taking in the Western ideas, which have been as a plague on our society. The result has been centuries of chaos.

It follows that the one thing we should not do to the men and women of past time, and particularly if they ghost through to us as larger than life, is to take them out of their historical contexts. To do so is to run the risk of turning them into monsters, whom we can denounce for our (frequently political) motives—an insidious game, because we are condemning in their make-up that which is likely to belong to a whole social world, the world that helped to fashion them and that is deviously reflected or distorted in them. My mother, who would always buy her books new, hated it the vintage hardcovers with their cracked spines and threadbare cloth covers. True you couldn't go in there and buy the latest best seller, but when you held one of those volumes in your hands, you were leafing through another person'a life. Someone else had once loved that story, too. Someone else had carried that book in a backpack, devoured it over breakfast, mopped up that coffee stain at a Paris café, cried herself to sleep after that last chapter. The scent was distinctive: a slight damp mildew, a punch of dust. To me, it was the smell of history.

Elle n'enseigne rigoureusement rien, car elle contient tout, et donne des exemples de tout.

It is necessary to have “watchers” at hand who will bear witness to the values of Tradition in ever more uncompromising and firm ways, as the anti-traditional forces grow in strength. Even though these values cannot be achieved, it does not mean that they amount to mere “ideas.” These are MEASURES…. Let people of our time talk about these things with condescension as if they were anachronistic and anti-historical; we know that this is an alibi for their defeat. Let us leave modern men to their “truths” and let us only be concerned about one thing: to keep standing amid a world of ruins.

Saya malu sekali memikirkan kepentingan pribadi. saya berpikir-pikir dan mengelamun tentang keadaan saya sendiri dan di luar, di sekekliling saya demikian banyaknya orang yang hidup menderita dan sengsara. Seolah-olah udara tiba-tiba bergetar disebabkan oleh suara orang-orang menderita disekeliling saya yang menjerit, mengerang dan mengeluh. Lebih keras lagi dari suara mengerang dan mengeluh terdengar bunyi mendesing dan menderau dalam telinga saya: Bekerja! Bekerja! Bekerja! Berjuanglah membebaskan diri! Baru setelah kamu bekerja membebaskan diri, akan dapatlah kamu menolong orang lain! Bekerja! Suara itu saya dengar terang sekali.
